About Us
We are a archery club located at the Plimmerton Domain adjacent to Plimmerton Railway Station. Our members shoot arrows at targets ranging from 5m to 90m away on targets from 5 cm across to 120 cm across, or even full size 3D animals and dinosaurs!
Our main 90m range on the domain and 30m range on the adjacent bowling green ranges
We normally shoot target outdoors on Saturday and Sunday mornings from around 9.30 am to Midday, all year round. Field shooting is available Sundays by arrangement. During the summer months, mid week shooting is available. Check out the club posts and Facebook page for range availability.
We cater for archers from 12 to over 70 years of all abilities and experience whether you want to have fun or to compete at club, regional, national or international levels.
Our members past and present include NZ record holders, World record holders, World Champs participants, NZ National Champions and Masters World Champions.

Frequently asked questions
Is archery for men and women?
Yes. All genders. World Archery and the Wellington Archery Association still shoot by male female divisions. Mana Archery club often holds shoots which are not gender based as most archery rounds and distances allow all genders to compete at the same level.
When is the club and ranges open?
- The club and ranges are normally open every Saturday at 9.30am. Target butts are to be shared i.e. four archers.
- If you turn up after 10.30am you risk not being able to shoot the distance you want or being allocated a target butt.
- Access to club rooms, club bows and club arrows after 12.00 is restricted to those on beginners courses
- Access to ranges after noon on Saturdays will depend upon whether a beginners course is scheduled and/or a senior club member is available to manage the line.
- Shooting mid week during the summer and on Sundays will depend upon whether a senior club member is available to open up and manage the line. Check the club Facebook page and latest posts on the website.
- The club calendar is here and has all organized shoots and club events which impact access to the club rooms and ranges.
New to archery?
We run a five week course that runs from 1pm to 2.30pm on Saturday afternoons. On the fifth week there is a proficiency test to ensure that you are safe and skilled enough to shoot without being watched over the whole time. On reaching the required standard you are welcome to join the club.
The course runs about 4 times a year, depending on demand. Course dates are roughly in line with school terms.
Is there a set program?
Mana has a progressive achievement programme taking you from beginner level through the Archery New Zealand system, which caters for archers up to elite level.
How old do you need to be?
We encourage archers to be 12 years of age before they start.
There is no maximum age, health permitting.
Already a archer and want to join us?
Then come along on a Saturday between 10.00 to midday and one of our senior members will run through our health and safety assessment to ensure that your equipment and shooting style is safe and not a risk to other archers on the line.
Do I need my own gear?
If you are a beginner and are on one of our courses then you have use of club gear free of charge. On completion of a beginners course you are required to lease a set of club arrows which you are required to care for. The club will purchase back the set of arrows at the original purchase price with deductions for any missing or broken arrows from the set if you no longer require the set of arrows.
We do not recommend buying your own gear for six months until you have acquired experience. It is advisable to check with club members and the club if there is second hand gear available for sale when you first buy your own archery set-up.
What types of bow can I use and/or the club support?
We have archers who shoot longbows, horse bows, bare bow recurve, Olympic recurve bows and compound bows. Unfortunately we cannot cater for crossbows. We have members with multiple bows and often change bow divisions depending on the type of shoot.
How much will gear cost?
If you are keen to buy you own gear, a good archery set-up starts in the region of $500.00. For social archery this can be much less. This will be sufficient for most archers for a couple of years, which is usually when they will want to upgrade. We do not recommend buying your own gear for six months until you have acquired experience and know which bow style you want to shoot.
It is advisable to check with club members and the club if there is second hand gear available for sale when you first buy your own archery set-up.
If I am interested in competitions do you cater for me?
Mana Archery Club regularly hosts competitions and members participate in organized tournaments, from interclub shoots, through to regional and national level.
Competitions have bow divisions and age classes to suit all competitors. The club members are well represented across bow divisions and age classes and has amongst its members National and World Champions including record holders.
Our best competitive archers are always willing to impart advice and mentor those keen to be competitive.
There are also postal competitions
Do you cater for those who want to hunt?
We have club members who hunt. However, we do not run or organize any hunting activity. The club does organize 3d animal shoots which give a taste of hunting without the ‘kill’.
Is there a governing body for archery?
Included in their membership, every club member will be a member of Archery New Zealand. This is the main archery body for target archery which is associated to World Archery and recognized by Sport NZ.
Unfortunately, there is no one body and it depends upon your interest and style of shooting. We have members who belong to one or more depending upon their needs. We can advise which affiliation is best for you as memberships is in addition to the club fees.
The club itself is affiliated to the WAA, ANZ and NZFAA. The WA and IFFA are world governing bodies.
- WAA = Wellington Archery Association
- NZFAA = New Zealand Field Archery Association
- ANZ = Archery New Zealand
- WA = World Archery
- IFFA = International Field Archery Association
